What Causes Clogs: DIY Drain Cleaning Tips

Over time, hair and other debris can build up inside the pipes of your sink or tub. When enough material gets caught on an obstruction such as a curve or bend in the pipeline where it connects with the main drainage system, a clog can form. This DIY drain cleaning guide will help you to clear those clogs before they cause any more headaches!

  • Baking Soda and Salt – Combine 1/2 cup of both baking soda and salt, and pour it down the bathroom sink drain. After 15 minutes, pour boiling water down.
  • Baking soda and vinegar: Just like salt, vinegar creates a powerful reaction when combined with baking soda. This mixture doesn’t require boiling water. Simply mix 1/3 cup of each together and immediately pour it down the drain.
  • Boiling water – Careful. It must be at boiling temperature and poured safely.
  • Try using a shop vacuum – this may dislodge the clogged material
  • Use a drain snake
  • Try using a plunger
  • If all else fails, call in the professionals! (Link to the drain cleaning page)

DIY Drain Cleaning for Sinks: Tips and Tricks

Sink drains are often clogged by hair and other debris that accumulates over time. Here are some tips on how to deal with this common issue:

  • Make sure you have enough water in the sink to cover the plunger head
  • Place the plunger over the drain hole and push and pull until suction is created. Hold it there for about 20 seconds before releasing it.
  • Do this repeatedly until the water starts draining properly again.

If DIY drain cleaning does not work, you can try using a snake. For sinks, fill up the basin with enough water to cover the plunger head (but don’t splash yourself!). Then place the snake over the drain hole and push and pull until you feel resistance from whatever got stuck up inside there – usually hair clogs will stop at the U-bend. When you’ve got a good grip, twist the snake around a few times in each direction and pull it back out. If it’s successful, the clog will be dislodged and go down the drain.

DIY Drain Cleaning for Tubs: Tips and Tricks

Tubs can be clogged by the same things that cause sink drains to clog – hair and other debris. Here are some tips on how to deal with this common issue:

  • Make sure you have enough water in the tub to cover the plunger head.
  • Place the plunger over the overflow hole and push and pull until suction is created. Hold it there for about 20 seconds before releasing it.
  • Do this repeatedly until the water starts draining properly again.

If home remedy solutions do not work, you can try using a snake – like you would for sinks. For tubs, put the plunger over the overflow hole and do the same thing. Be sure to keep your hand over the top of the overflow so it doesn’t splash out.

To get a good grip on whatever got stuck up inside there (usually hair clogs will stop at the U-bend), twist the snake around several times in each direction and pull it back out.
